Mount Gambier Library will host a special family event with local author Kylie Tull for the launch of her picture book Huxley’s Home on Saturday 12 October at 11:00am.
The story follows Huxley the hermit crab who spends his days feasting on algae surrounding his ocean reef. When Huxley realises his shell has become too tight, he sets off on an adventure to find a new home but his mission is hampered by an ocean of litter.
Author Kylie Tull has always had a passion for reading and as a teacher she is especially interested in high-quality literature for children. The idea for ‘Huxley’s Home’ came about after reading an article about how hermit crabs have been found using rubbish for their home instead of a shell. Kylie was amazed at how adaptable creatures can be but also concerned that litter in and around the ocean has become so prevalent across the world.
My hope is that Huxley can help demonstrate the harm that can be done to animals as a result of litter and help people think about how they discard their rubbish. - Author Kylie Tull
The expressive illustrations by Alice Mastropaolo bring these ocean characters and settings to life and help to create an engaging read for children of all ages.
“It is such an honour to be launching this fabulous book, not only because it is such an engaging story, but because Kylie is a local. It is so important to celebrate and promote local authors – especially those who have a passion about inspiring young readers to create their own stories.” Manager Library and Community Development Georgina Davison said.
This is a family friendly event with a book reading, followed by an activity for children. Huxley’s Home will be available for sale and signing on the day and the book can also be pre-ordered through Collins Booksellers.
