To coincide with the commencement of the election period on 4 September 2018 caretaker training sessions have been arranged for Elected Members and staff on 27 and 28 August 2018.
The Local Government (Elections) Act 1999 provides that Council must adopt a Caretaker Policy governing the conduct of the Council and its staff during the election period for a general election.
The Caretaker Policy is a taken to form part of the each Code of Conduct in relation to Council Members and staff under the Local Government Act 1999.
At its meeting on 19 June 2018 Caretaker Policy C305 was re-adopted by Council.

Each session will run for about 45 minutes and will cover a range of activities that are prohibited and restricted during the election period including the use of Council resources for candidates.
The Caretaker Policy also imposes restrictions on a range of Council resources and activities during the election period including publications, website, events and functions, member/candidate access to council information and briefing material, media services, publicity campaigns and consultation.
Attendance at one of these sessions is highly recommended for current Elected Members and for staff who are likely to be involved with any of the abovementioned restricted activities.
